En-route stops
One advantage of travelling by private transfer is the ability to stop along the way. Two stops work naturally on the KL to Cherating route and can be added to your booking:
Batu Caves
A Hindu temple complex built into a limestone hill 13km north of KL city centre. The site includes the iconic 272-step rainbow staircase, the golden Lord Murugan statue at the entrance, and several cave temples at the top. A stop here adds around 45 to 60 minutes to your journey — long enough to climb the stairs, explore the main cave, and take photos before continuing to Cherating. See the Batu Caves visitor guide for what to expect.
Kuala Gandah Elephnat Sanctuary
A wildlife conservation centre in Pahang that sits almost directly on the route to Cherating. The sanctuary is home to rescued Sumatran and Asian elephants. Three visit options are available depending on how involved you want to be:
- Free visit — walk through the sanctuary and observe the elephants at no charge
- Education tour — guided tour with a nature guide, RM130 per group
- Elephant bathing — join the mahouts in the river to bathe the elephants, RM40 per adult. If you have not booked the education tour, an additional RM30 guide fee applies
The sanctuary only accepts cash. There are no card payment facilities on site and no ATM within the sanctuary grounds. Make sure you have enough Malaysian ringgit before you leave Kuala Lumpur — your driver can stop at a petrol station or convenience store en route if needed.
Allow one hour for a free visit and up to two hours if you are joining the bathing session. Entrance fees are not included in the transfer price and are paid directly at the sanctuary on arrival. See the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary guide for full details.
Both stops are optional. Let us know when booking which stops you would like to include so we can plan the departure time accordingly. If you are heading to Club Med Cherating, note that standard check-in is 3.00pm — an early morning departure from KL with a stop along the way often works out perfectly with that timing.
The route
The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Cherating follows the East Coast Expressway (LPT) for most of the journey — a well-maintained toll highway that runs northeast out of KL through Pahang before cutting down toward the coast. The total distance is approximately 300km and takes around four hours under normal traffic conditions, including a short rest stop.
Cherating sits on Pahang’s east coast facing the South China Sea. It is a small village — not a town — so there are no large transport hubs or bus terminals on arrival. Your driver drops you directly at your resort entrance, which means no navigating an unfamiliar area with luggage after a four-hour drive.
Traffic and timing
The East Coast Expressway is significantly busier during Malaysian public holidays and school breaks — particularly Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and the mid-year school holidays in June. If your travel dates fall near any of these, we recommend departing earlier than usual and building in extra time. We will flag this when confirming your booking if relevant.
Avoid departing KL during morning rush hour (8.00am to 9.30am) and evening rush hour (5.00pm to 7.00pm) where possible — particularly if you are starting from a hotel in the city centre. A 7.00am or 10.00am departure typically clears the city before traffic builds.
